  • The Health and safety executive defines PAT testing as the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure it is safe to use.

  • PAT testing is split into 2 sections first a visual inspection which is able to identify most electrical safety defects. Second there is an electrical safety testing using dedicated equipment these tests are capable of identifying any issues which cannot be identified by a visual inspection alone,

  • No there is no legal obligation to PAT test equipment. However There is a legal requirement to ensure all electrical equipment is sufficiently maintained to prevent danger. PAT testing is most common and efficient way of ensuring this legal requirement is met.

In some cases it may not be a legal requirement to PAT test it may be an insurance requirement with the potential for insurance being withdrawn for failing to maintain electrical equipment, conduct testing and keep records of that testing. Please consult your insurance policy for your specific obligations.
